Irregular menstrual periods: Most women notice changes in their menstrual pattern at first; they may experience irregular period for months at a time.
Infertility: During climacteric age, women secrete very low levels of estrogen, reducing their chances of conceiving.
Vaginal dryness: One of the most common menopausal symptoms is vaginal dryness, which is associated with itching and discomfort. Some women with vaginal dryness experience dyspareunia (painful coition). This is due to low estrogen levels. Some women have vaginal atrophy due to prolonged dryness and discomfort.
Hot flashes: Hot flushes is yet another common symptom of menopause. It may usually start in the face, which may then progress to the neck and chest. Along with flushes, a woman may typically start sweating, her heart rate may increase and become irregular, and she may have night sweats.
Disturbed Sleep: A woman going through menopause may find it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. Some women can have night sweats along with disturbed sleep.
Mood changes: During menopause, some women may have psychological symptoms such as mood changes and depression. Hormonal changes at climacteric age could trigger mood swings and depression, along with sleep disturbance. As a result of these psychological issues, women may experience poor sexual drive or desire.
Others: Other possible menopausal symptoms include urinary troubles, overweight or obesity, hair loss, and breast shrinkage.
Menopause Treatments
Women can check with their doctor to understand whether they need any treatments to maintain comfort during menopause. Most women do not require any treatment; however, it is better to seek medical advice. Doctors advise specific menopause treatment based on their symptoms, medical history, as well as personal preferences.
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): Women can prevent menopausal symptoms by taking hormonal supplements containing estrogen and progestin. HRT is available as a patch on the skin, which releases the hormones. HRT has been found highly effective at treating menopausal symptoms.
Medications: There are a few medications available to reduce the symptoms of menopause, such as antidepressants or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) to decrease hot flashes. Other drugs include gabapentin and clonidine. Vaginal dryness can be treated with generic estradiol. This medicine treats vaginal dryness, providing relief from itching and discomfort during sex. Moisturizers are also available over-the-counter to treat vaginal dryness.
Self-Management: Self-management of menopausal symptoms with a healthy diet and exercise has been found effective. Psychological counseling, meditation, yoga, deep-breathing exercises, and progressive relaxations have also been effective at preventing and treating the symptoms of menopause.
