The time it takes a generic drug to appear on the market varies. In the US, drug patents give twenty years of protection, but they are applied for before clinical trials begin, so the effective life of a drug patent tends to be between seven and twelve years.

Yes. The FDA must first approve all generic drugs. The FDA requires that generic drugs must be as high in quality, and as strong, pure and stable as brand-name drugs. Generic drugs use the same active ingredients as brand-name drugs and work the same way. They have the same risks and the same benefits as the brand-name drugs.

The most important and the major difference between the two drugs is their cost.Branded drugs are much costlier then the generic drugs.The main reason for the difference in their price is because of the more advertisement and research cost needed for the branded drugs.

According to a study by the consumer health organization Families, pharmaceutical companies spend twice as much on marketing, advertising and administration as on research and development. The marketing cost makes the price of the branded drug shoot higher.
